The art of Toula Vivilakis is simultaneously tranquil and kinetic—compelling
large format oil paintings inspired by diverse influences ranging
from Greek, Egyptian, and Hawaiian mythologies, to elements in Chinese
Taoist philosophy—creating a wholly unique aesthetic, and
defiantly, Toula’s own.
“I like to watch the art I create materialize into ‘being,’
first through research of a subject, then I rely completely on my
memories or impressions of what I discover and allow my subconscious
to take over.”
Introducing a unique cubist-surreal style of painting, Toula’s
work hovers between what is abstract and tangible; dream and reality.
Toula achieves this by integrating geometric patterns with specific
opposite color scales in an effort to create “afterimages.”
Her end result is an optical weaving of repetitive shapes and color
within hints of classical realism left floating in transparent washes
originating an iconic representation of past meets present.
Toula currently lives and works on Maui, Hawaii, creating work
that portrays the lore and spirit of the islands. On Maui, Toula’s
work has been featured at the prestigious Mercedes Championships
in Kapalua, Maui, The Art Guide Maui, Maui Times and a returning
participant artist, in the Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center’s
exclusive “Art Affair Auction” Gala.
